Pretty cool! Ball State University Student Government Association just passed a bill to increase bathroom access for gender nonconforming individuals. The bill would make any new building on campus (or remodel of an older building) include at least one gender neutral restroom. They cite Refuge Restrooms in the article and list the bathrooms in our database that are on Ball State’s campus. Pretty awesome to see some actual legislative progress. Even if it is just one campus.

So I know times are hard for everybody but I did this thing called refugerestrooms “REFUGE restrooms” but it’s going to take a lot of work to finish it and do it right. At this moment I’m managing the development of the site and working on the code in addition to my full time job to pay the bills. So far I’m being tipped 81 dollars a week to work on refuge. That’s amazing. But it’s not enough. If I can get to 200 dollars a week I can drop to part time at my job. If I can get to 500 dollars I can quit my job and work on REFUGE restrooms full time and make it the best resource for the transgender community it possibly can.

If every person who is an ally to the trans community can donate 1 dollar a week I would easily be able to work on REFUGE full time. I say allies because I really don’t want the financial burden to be placed on trans folk themselves. If you are a cis ally to trans folk please donate to this. Or at least signal boost this.

I’m eternally grateful! You can donate on gittip! http://www.gittip.com/tkwidmer . And signal boost and reblog this post as much as possible!

REFUGE restrooms is now live on the web at http://www.refugerestrooms.org. It is viewable on any browser.

REFUGE seeks to provide safe bathroom access for transgender, intersex, and other gender nonconformist individuals. A few months back the valuable safe2pee database stopped working. We present Refuge as a replacement. Starting with the existing database of listings from Safe2Pee, refuge makes the database easily searchable and mappable to allow folks to find the nearest safe restroom.

This is very much in its alpha stage and had a lot of growing to do. I started learning how to code not that long ago so I’m still learning how I can make the app better and better. The app is open source so please contribute to the project on github @

Is this for US folk only, that needs to be stipulated

It’s not for US only. It maps world wide. There are lots of entities in major metro cities worldwide. Lots in Canada and UK. And you can add them in other countries.

Trans woman releases safe bathroom-finding app

gaywrites:

As debates rise over school-based bathroom bills, one trans woman and coder is doing her part to make sure there are safe spaces for trans* and nonbinary folks out in the world too.

Refuge Restrooms is an open-source collection of trans*-safe public bathrooms, accessible by mobile phone. It was created by San Francisco-based Teagan Widmer, and even in its early stages already has 4,000 bathrooms mapped across the world. It even tells you if certain bathrooms have conditions attached, such as needing to be a “paying customer,” and can be filtered by ADA accessibility and unisex designations.

Can you provide a little background on why bathroom access for trans individuals is an issue? What are some of the challenges trans people face when using public restrooms?

I think trans people face a unique set of complications when it comes to bathroom usage. I know for me, when I was early in my transition, I didn’t feel comfortable in either bathroom. I no longer felt comfortable in the men’s restroom, but I didn’t feel comfortable in the women’s bathroom either. I felt people’s eyes on me — I felt judgement. I felt like I didn’t “pass enough.” The concept of passing is super problematic in and of itself, but it’s especially hard when it comes to bathroom usage. Many trans folk are left feeling really unsafe. If I go into the women’s room, I might get yelled at. If I go into the men’s room, I might get assaulted. And that brings up violence.

Just this week I was reading the story of a young transgender student who was attacked in a bathroom at California State University, Long Beach, and had the word “it” carved on their chest. That terrifies me. And it happens probably more than we know — at least to a lesser extent. So trans people end up being afraid to use the bathroom and “holding it,” which can cause all kinds of physical problems like urinary tract infections.

Also, there are folks who don’t identify as male or female, and who identify as nonbinary, who don’t feel comfortable using either bathroom, so they need to find unisex or gender-neutral restrooms to feel the most safe.

And here is the website: Refuge Restrooms

It’s open source, yay! But new and lacking somewhat in UK listings. I encourage you to add your local safe toilets.

Wow, I wish I knew Ruby so I could contribute to the repo.

Learn! I didn’t know ruby or any programming language 6 months ago. And now I built my first app!

This is FANTASTIC news!!!!

Ruby on Rails is the way to go if you want good web development. You could probably port it to the major mobile OSes if you wanted to.

That is part of the goal. To have native apps. We are working on it as hard as we can!
